Worth Its Weight In Gold

If today I were to stumble upon an interesting looking lamp sitting on a neighbor’s stoop, rub it wishfully, and to my surprise be granted one wish by a very zany, though very friendly Robin Williams-esque genie, I would choose… to have a washer/dryer in my apartment!

Yes, I realize that with one wish I could aspire to so much more. I realize that I could ask to become a multi-millionaire. In this case I could just buy myself a washer/dryer and even hire someone to do the laundry for me. In fact, I could probably get all manner of people to do all kinds of things for me.

The thing is, I’m one of those people that believes that if you ask for something too big in a situation like that, you really run the risk of altering the universe too much which could potential result in catastrophic consequences. Come on people, didn’t you see Bruce Almighty? I don’t want Morgan Freeman casting his precious smirk at me as he watches my entire life go down the drain over a tiny little wish for millions of dollars that were only meant to buy me the luxury of having my own washer/dryer to begin with. Just not the way I want to go out. Better to just go straight for the small, seemingly insignificant, but personally high impact wish.

You’ve probably guessed by now that yesterday was Laundry Day. I tell you what, I dread Laundry Day. I hate the song and dance of packing up all of our textilian (yeah, I think I made that word up) belongings, piling them in our rickety metal shopping carts, balancing our detergent on the mountainous pile, rummaging for money and our laundry card, then clanking the whole kit and caboodle down three flights of stairs and down two blocks of uneven sidewalks only to arrive at a laundromat where you are never sure if you will be greeted like an old pal or a cosmic burden.

  • Folding is annoying too. By the time you gather the courage to tackle laundry it is inevitable that you have accumulated an abominable snowman worth of clothing, sheets, towels, blankets, etc.. Washing it all is the easy part. It’s folding that mother-load that is your demise. Last night, between my husband and I, it took us one full hour just to fold laundry. We made it out of the laundromat just minutes before the 11pm closing time. If you know our laundromat gals, you know we escaped the time bomb.

Really, all I want in this world is a washer/dryer. I know, it’s a luxury. I get it. Not everyone in the world gets to have a washer/dryer.

But Laundry Day drama could all be avoided if I just had a couple of simple machines in the comfort of my apartment that would lend a hand by taking gobbling up little loads of laundry throughout the week. My husband’s stinky running clothes and endless piles of socks, for instance. That in and of itself would probably reduce Laundry Day folding by, say, 30%.

I’m sure many of you feel my pain. Laundry Day is a crux so many of us carry, especially in the fine City of New York. But I tell you what, if I had one wish today- ooh. My very washer/dryer would be at the top of my list. Those puppies are worth their laundry weight in gold.

I’m doing laundry today!! I have 3 baskets full of dirty clothes! I’m driving to Ryan’s sister’s house, about 30 minutes away, to get it all done… at least i get to watch on-demand movies while I fold! :)
Btw, I really like the new layout!

Thanks Isa! I’m happy with it too. I think it is more me. Hope the laundry went well. ;-)

Yes, that is the challenge, indeed. I’m afraid there will not be a washer/dryer in this apartment anytime soon!
